Allow me to give you a bit of history and definitions. The oxford dress shirt originated from Scotland in the 19th Century where a Scottish Mill named four fabrics after the four famous universities: Cambridge, Yale, Harvard and Oxford. Of the four fabrics, only the Oxford continued production due to its popularity. One of its popular uses was as a sports shirt for England polo players. The players would wear long-sleeved Oxford shirts for their matches as the fabric was comfortable and breathable. The Oxford fabric is defined by the oxford weave- a basket weave pattern that combines two yarns woven lengthwise against a heavier yarn otherwise. A dress shirt is defined as a garment with a stiff collar and a full-length opening at the front which is fastened using buttons r shirt studs. A button-down shirt on the other hand, is a dress shirt which has a button-down collar- a collar having the ends fastened to the shirt with buttons.
